I was watching a video of Oprah Winfrey interviewing Tracee Ellis Ross, and it was absolutely extraordinary. I highly recommend you take the time to watch it. I believe it’s the most powerful conversation in the whole series Oprah did—yes, even more impactful than the one with Michelle Obama, at least for me.
One moment from that interview stayed with me months later. Tracee said something so simple, yet so profound: “Gentle, gentle.” She explained that whenever she starts to get ahead of herself or becomes overwhelmed in her thoughts, she gently reminds herself with those two words. It helps her return to grace and compassion within.
I didn’t realize how deeply I had internalized that phrase until one day, after making a mistake that had big consequences, I found myself spiraling in self-judgment. In the midst of that storm, I heard it softly within me: “Gentle, gentle, Monica.” In that moment, I remembered that I am doing the best I can—especially during a year filled with so much change and chaos. And if no one else chooses to handle me with care, the least I can do is be gentle with myself.
So I say to you, you are a good mother, employer, son, artist, father, employee, daughter, man, person, woman – you are. You are beautiful, caring, sweet, giving, approachable, intelligent, loving, and kind – you are. You are wonderfully and magnificently made in your own unique package of perfection. You are!
On this marvelous Monday, I say to you as I say to myself: gentle, gentle, beautiful people. Gentle, gentle.
