You Are the Purpose: A Soulful Reflection on Living Fully

Hello, beautiful people!

I come bearing a message that has led me to a path of completeness in how I view and engage with life, and I hope it guides you in the same way.

While I’m on this fast, messages pointing me toward the enjoyment of life in its simplest form keep showing up in the most fascinating ways. Because of this, I revisited the movie Soul. I believe I mentioned the impact this movie had on me in a previous post, so forgive me if it seems repetitive. But when a message keeps showing up, you have to listen until it digs deep and plants roots in your soul as a reminder to keep you on track.

So, as it is, I found myself watching this movie again. It wasn’t that I wanted to watch it for the sake of just watching it, but there was a message pulling at my soulstrings that wouldn’t let me go until I fully took it all in. Has that ever happened to you? A message that kept winking at you, one you had to keep returning to, studying it because you could tell there was something deeper than just a cute movie that you were missing? That’s what’s happening with me and this movie. I’ve seen it several times now, and each time I walk away with a new layer of the same message being revealed.

This time, I knew I was ready to fully grasp the meaning of the message, and I knew it would change my life and how I viewed it—not just because of the movie, but because I am fasting and hyper-focused on life transformation. So, you could say my ears and spirit are on high alert to receive everything meant for me.

Some scenes lingered with me long after, pulling me back for another look. One of them was when one of the Jerrys responds to Joe’s question about not knowing what 22’s purpose was—or how her spark pass was completed. Jerry said something that stuck out to me: “We don’t assign purposes, where did you get that from? You mentors and your views on what purpose is.” Now, this isn’t verbatim, just my interpretation of the line. But it felt like a flippant way of saying, “You humans and your naive interpretations of purpose.” Like, you’re missing the whole point of what purpose really is. I would always hear that line, and it would throw me off because, like Joe, I thought your spark was your purpose. This one line, casually thrown in, was a gentle hint: you are missing the real message this movie is driving home.

Another moment was when Joe finally got to do what he dreamed of, thinking it would change his life. He reached his goal—and after their successful set, he asked Dorothea, “So, what now?” She told him, “We come back tomorrow and do it again.” Then, she shared a little story about a fish. A fish went up to another fish and said it was looking for the ocean. The other fish replied, “You’re in the ocean.” But the first fish insisted, “This is just water, I’m looking for the ocean.” Let that sink in. As Joe rode home on the train and entered his apartment, you could sense what he felt: nothing had changed, except for the achievement of his goal. It presented the question, what happens when you reach all your goals, achieve everything, but it doesn’t bring fulfillment, happiness, peace, or joy? It challenges you to think, what’s the point of goals? Because in the movie, you’re cheering Joe on to accomplish his goal, and at this moment, you realize there’s a deeper message here.

Then I caught it.

There’s a point where Joe tells 22, who is excited about the basic enjoyments of life, thinking maybe that’s her spark. Joe tells her, “That’s just plain ol’ living, 22.” And there it is. If you’re like me, from the first statement I mentioned to the last, it makes you wonder: What’s the difference between a spark and your purpose? After revisiting the movie and really absorbing all of its hidden (and not-so-hidden) messages, I pieced it together—at least, for what it meant for me.

You see, at some point in the movie, we learn that a new soul is ready to go to Earth when it’s ready to live, and it gains its passage when it has found its spark. They go hand in hand. But if you’re not careful, you can make a spark your life purpose, becoming so bogged down in trying to make it happen that you miss out on living, getting trapped in obsession and potentially losing yourself in it—becoming a lost soul.

Sparks in our lives remind us of the beauty of life. They act as vehicles for how to enjoy it. Our purpose is to live, to enjoy the simplicity of life. I’ll offer an example of this moment of transparency. I lived most of my life in the pursuit of my purpose: to build soul-led communities and act as a guide for individuals who needed help finding their way. To create relationships and a lifestyle I lovingly call “Instagrammable” as proof of living a purpose-driven life while also paying it forward on a soul level. What this movie helped me see is that all of that is sparks. Lots of sparks that are simply meant to accompany our true purpose, which is to live.

So if living is our purpose, then what does that look like?

Now you see why I had to revisit this movie so many times. Living in a world that tells you you don’t have enough, you are not enough, and that you always need more, accomplish more, be more, can lead you to a false reality where you believe this is your purpose. Living is your purpose. It’s what you’ll want to feel you accomplished at the end of your life. It’s what you experience as an individual soul. It carries your story, your life experiences, desires, wounds, and wisdom. It is the essence of who you are, not what you do. What you do is your spark—something that adorns who you are… that is, if you’re in alignment.

So, back to me as the example.
Now, my view of life is to live a fulfilling life that reflects who I am—while enjoying the sparks of what I do.

My spark is creating home goods and jewelry with intention.
My spark is pouring wisdom into the world to guide people to their highest selves.
My spark is enjoying beautiful, carefully crafted, intentional relationships—both platonic and intimate.
My spark is traveling to beautiful places, cooking for loved ones, taking care of my furbaby, and loving on her.

All of those are sparks.

Do you see the difference yet?

My purpose is to live a life of gratitude—to allow my soul the experience of enjoying the simplicity of all that life has to offer.

I once heard someone say that your soul came into this body to experience things it otherwise wouldn’t be able to outside of the human form. That it is excited to have eyes to see, ears to hear, the sense of touch and taste—and that it’s ready to take it all in.
But there’s a catch: it can’t experience any of it unless you take it.

Can you imagine an unborn soul gaining senses for the first time?
How it would marvel at the simplest things it may have only heard whispers about—now finally able to feel, taste, and witness them in real time?

To enjoy summer as the heat settles in, calling out to your soul that it’s time to play—time to be outside and revel in all that Mother Earth has placed on display.
To savor fall as the leaves change and that perfect temperature between warm and cool arrives, reminding your soul that the harvest season is here.
To lean into the embrace of winter, where everything goes into hibernation—gently encouraging your soul to nurture itself, to go within.
And finally, spring—when the rains arrive to wake everything up, whispering to your soul that, just like the circle of life, new beginnings always come.

To feel the water beneath your feet, the sun on your face, the cool breeze brushing your skin.
To take in the vibrant colors of autumn, the rustling of leaves swirling around you.
To explore the snow and feel the warmth from the fire.
To move your body freely.
To drink water that cleanses you from the inside out.
To see colors.
To hear the laughter of children in the distance.
To lie on a blanket in the park, soaking in the sounds of birdsong.

Your purpose is to make sure your soul is experiencing the simple beauty of life as it lives this one, precious human experience.

Your sparks are there to adorn that individual soul experience.

So… what simple pleasures are you taking your soul to experience?

Love you lots,
—Sacred
