Today, I noticed that I’ve really been attracted to the color red—but not just any shade of red. It’s that deep burgundy shade, which made me think of one of my favorite gemstones: garnet. Whenever I start noticing a correlation in colors, it’s time to go within and see what message is trying to come through. For me, that usually leads me down the path to the chakras, and in this case, that would be the root chakra.
I have two chakras that I normally have to constantly stay on top of, and one of them is the root chakra. The root chakra represents stability and security, and it’s the one I’ve battled with most of my life. Stability and security, for me, are how I gauge my life and how I feel about it. I’m not really sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but here we are.
I’ve experienced a lot of challenges that have made me hold onto the trauma surrounding those experiences. Because of this, I’m always in search of ways to have, obtain, and maintain a state of stability and security. But with life, that is not always possible. At least not in a way where everything is constant, unchanging, and always the same. There will always be some form of change, whether it’s a little or a lot, and that will cause shifts in your life at times.
As I learn to let go and flow through life—allowing it to move as needed and things to flow in and out according to the seasons and the timespan they are supposed to be here—I tussle with my past trauma from time to time. In those moments, I utilize different methods to balance my root chakra.
The root chakra is the first energy center in the body that is located at the base of the spine. It is responsible for our sense of stability, safety, and grounding. When this chakra is in a balanced and healthy state, you feel secure, connected, and able to cope with life’s challenges. You will feel safe in your body as well as in your environment. You will have confidence in knowing that you have everything you need to survive and thrive.
In a healthy, balanced state, the root chakra promotes a sense of:
- Security and stability
- Groundedness and connection to the earth
- A feeling of abundance and being supported
- Strength in the face of adversity
On the other hand, when the root chakra is unbalanced or blocked, it can lead to feelings of insecurity, fear, and instability. You might experience:
- Fear of change or the unknown
- Feelings of being disconnected
- Chronic anxiety or worry
- Physical issues such as lower back pain or digestive problems
- Difficulty with financial or emotional stability
Colors and Stones Associated with the Root Chakra
The root chakra is associated with the color red. This deep, earthy tone represents strength, vitality, and passion—qualities that are the root to your survival and well-being. See what I did there? Anywho, the rich red hue also represents the blood flow within your body and its connection to life force energy.
The use of stones and crystals can also be energetically high ways in balancing and healing the root chakra. My two favorite stones to use for this purpose are:
- Garnet: Known for its deep red color, garnet is a stone of strength, vitality, and grounding. It helps anchor energy to the Earth and can assist in overcoming fear and insecurity. Garnet is also associated with passion, creativity, and emotional healing.
- Hematite: Although it is not red, it can be used when working with the root chakra. It has a metallic sheen and is great for doing some grounding work. It can be used to help balance the root chakra by promoting a sense of stability and calm. Hematite can also aid in overcoming feelings of fear and anxiety, providing a sense of protection and strength.
Balancing the Root Chakra
There are several methods you can use to balance and heal the root chakra, from meditation to yoga and crystal therapy. Here are a few of my favorites:
1. Meditation with Stones
One of the most effective ways to balance the root chakra is through meditation with crystals. You can place a stone like garnet or hematite directly over your root chakra, located at the base of your spine, while you meditate. Focus on breathing deeply and visualizing red light flowing into your body, specifically into the area of your root chakra. Imagine the red light healing and grounding you, bringing you a sense of safety and security. I like to focus on the issues I’m addressing during meditation. For instance, if I’m feeling uncertain about my job stability, I’ll meditate on the belief that I have everything I need and the confidence that I am capable of taking care of myself in any situation.
2. Yoga for Grounding
Yoga poses that focus on grounding and stability are particularly beneficial for balancing the root chakra. These poses help you connect with your body and the Earth. Some of the most effective poses include:
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand tall with feet firmly grounded on the floor, feeling the Earth’s support.
- Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I): This strong, stable stance encourages a sense of confidence and rootedness.
- Child’s Pose (Balasana): This restorative pose promotes relaxation and a deep connection to the Earth.
- Tree Pose (Vrksasana): Standing on one leg helps improve balance, focus, and a sense of being anchored.
4. Grounding
Spending time in nature is one of the most effective ways to balance the root chakra. When the weather permits, walk barefoot on the earth, sit under a tree, or simply connect with nature as you sit outside on your patio or balcony. This helps you feel more grounded and connected to the planet. The Earth’s energy will help stabilize your root chakra and relieve feelings of anxiety or fear.
Always Remember:
Balancing the root chakra is essential to maintaining stability and security in your life. Whether you do it through meditation, yoga, or work with healing stones like garnet and hematite, there are many ways to nurture this energy center and promote a sense of being balanced and grounded. As you move through this journey, remember that life is about flow and change. When you prioritize balance within yourself, you learn to navigate life, and the shifts that come along with it, with a sense of peace and well being.
Love you lots!
